Unwind in the tranquil beauty of OTHONI HIDDEN GEMS

Calypso's Cave

Calypso’s Cave, a location steeped in legend, is widely believed to be the same cave mentioned in the epic tale of The Odyssey. According to the myth, there existed an island owned by the nymph Calypso, the daughter of Atlas, who lived in a cave. This enchanting cave served as the dwelling where the nymph Calypso held the hero Odysseus captive for a duration of seven years, following a violent shipwreck caused by a mighty storm. The island was referred to as “Ogygia” by Homer, and it emitted a strong scent of cypress. When Odysseus set sail on a makeshift raft, he encountered a shipwreck and, after battling the waves, he found himself on Scheria, the island of the Phaeacians, which we now know as Corfu. This element of the story adds credibility to the myth, given the short distance that separates these two islands. Notably, Calypso’s Cave is situated in the western part of Othonoi island, adjacent to the picturesque Aspri Ammos beach. Access to the cave is limited to private boats, adding to its allure. With dimensions of approximately 100 meters in length, 10 meters in width, and a height of 20 meters, this captivating site offers a glimpse into the mythical world.
